Digital signage solutions including LCD enclosures

Archive for March, 2010

The first digital signage company became involved with the cinema scene in 2007 with its initial LCD display selection and development of that product. Eventually it became more involved in the entire digital advertising scope of work given its capabilities and awareness of the focus required to manage a successful project.

Prior to the involvement of such media focused companies, kiosks were installed and maintained by various vendors and the servicing levels were inconsistent. Specialist companies became the key contact for all service issues by aggregating critical information from installers and other vendors into a Web portal. This opportunity enabled users to identify asset tags, service repair records and the installation status on all displays. Asset markings on all products helped track their location and maintenance analyses.

Using a Web portal enables a 24×7 online support services package that is offered with most display packages. Involvement on the front end is vital too. A key specialist team conducted an onsite survey which analyzed theaters, entryways, concession stands, and other public areas to determine the best locations and positioning opportunities. Once sites were selected and the right services and products identified, all technical analyses information on kiosks and their positioning was relayed, through the Web portal, to installers. This process enabled technicians to reference critical information while installing and or servicing kiosks at movie theaters.

Customized software can be professionally installed on media players, then delivered and staged for each location’s requirements. In addition, the service team may create an instruction manual that enables technicians at different sites to standardize the kiosk installation processes. Updates on installation and servicing are electronically emailed from this portal to sales and installation teams. A specialist movie theatre signage team will service maintenance requests, and provided daily status report updates via the customer specific Web portal. Post-installation, customer satisfaction surveys may also be collated and submitted to the theater management. By gathering intelligence, analyses and the demographics, on theater clients and kiosk performance and by standardizing installation and maintenance procedures, it enables the client to save on operation costs.

Overview

By 2012, market experts predict that digital signage will be utilized in almost 90 percent of the world’s retail space. Within the consumer world, movie theatres have been an appropriate medium for digital signage. These solutions capture the attention of movie-goers in lobbies, as they manoeuvre around the site to and from theaters and their amenities. A world away from the more traditional static print advertising, a single digital POS (point of sale) display can easily and quickly provide a range of advertisers with striking and animated imagery.

An experienced visual technology solutions integrator provides a unique consultative approach to this market. They will address every aspect of a signage solution – from engineering and manufacturing components to installing and maintaining them. In effect, choosing one who is more nimble than another, digital signage companies will be capable of delivering a tailored system.

The Digital Cinema Scene Solution

Cinema marketers and promoters cater for movie studios and corporate brands. In theatre lobbies they positions brands in front of targeted consumers by running commercial spots on digital signage stands and also deliver comprehensive concession, box office and on-screen program management and planning. It uses new media technology, such as digital media and mobile marketing to promote brands and theater amenities.

For cinema marketing kiosk products, digital signage companies provided custom backend hardware, imaging, staging, installation and technical services to fulfil the project and its rollout requirements, offering comprehensive service and support. This effectively deploys large screen custom kiosks in a movie theatre environment which traditionally caters to the demographics of children and young adults.

Looking at the range of outdoor cinema essentials, these are the combinations recommended:

  • Movie source – DVD player, computer, Blu-ray or HD DVD player
  • Projector – High brightness projector with built in speakers
  • Screen – Either an enormous wall (painted white), or a rolled up or inflatable screen

OR

  • Movie source – DVD player, computer, Blu-ray or ND DVD player
  • Projector – High brightness
  • Amplifier and Speakers – either an amplifier and set of speakers or a set of speakers suitable specifically for the outdoors, with more impressive volume levels than those of a set built into a projector.
  • Screen – Large white painted wall, with a roll-up/pull down or inflatable screen.

There are so many ways to approach the outdoor cinema entertainment challenge. The first option is to start with a portable projector or media player, as it can be used indoors or out, taken on holiday or packed away when not in use. But on what will the movie be shown? There’s nothing to stop you getting out the paint brush and creating your own fixed screen in your back yard using a can of white paint, alternatively you could invest in a roll-up vinyl screen, either totally portable or located at a fixed point on your wall. Another option is the inflatable screen, once fully inflated; it creates a suitable all weather screen for your entertainment.

All you have to do now is choose your movie, invite your buddies and chill out in your own Back Yard Box Office! (Refreshments optional !!)

There is a certain magic about cinema in its own right. It doesn’t matter how big your Plasma TV or LCD screen is, cinema has to be big and projectors provide a picture that reproduces the cinema experience in the outdoors. Schools and caravan parks are amongst the most frequent customers, whilst the home market has yet to catch up. However there are some high profile customers, with large houses who have extensive exteriors in which to house these exciting Al Fresco cinema entertainment areas, getting the full benefit of an elaborate install. As outdoor cinema screens are becoming more popular, a number of alternative applications, like digital outdoor advertising, are being employed.

Not to be sexist, but the wife often favours the outdoor Back Yard cinema package as they see it less of a threat that that of LCD or giant plasma which dominates the interior of the home.

The light output of the projector is a serious factor in establishing the outside home cinema. An outdoor cinema projection system is more demanding than that of an indoor one due to the high illumination. This is because of the brightness of the night sky from street lights, car head lights and house lights, amongst others, particularly in cities where the concentration of light pollution is greatest. Using a projector rated at 2200 ANSI lumens is recommended.

Thanks to Blu-ray and HD DVD movies, factoring in a player will give extra ‘Wow’ to the already staggering ‘Wow factor’!

bbq-brethrenNow once you have your rubs and marinades ready, you have decided what you are cooking and for home many, why not just go that extra step and put a TV system outdoors? This way you will be able to watch the game and your wife can watch her favourite programme after the game. This will create a good and unique talking point between you, your family and any other guests.

The bonus will be that you stay outside longer and enjoy the night more than normal as the children will be occupied the early TV children’s programs, the men can watch the game and the woman can watch their programs later, making this summer the summer to remember.

If you intend on leaving your TV system outdoors, remember to look for some type of protection from the weather, accidents and potential theft, you don’t want to find one of your children has hit the screen with a ball, or that the weather has frozen all the circuits inside the TV, or worse still the TV has been stolen!

Enjoy.

Remember the Disney movie Madagascar? Remember the likable penguin characters – Rico, Private, Kowalski and Sarg? Well these penguins are based in a New York Zoo and this is where our project started.

The World Conservation Society owns the Bronx Zoo, they invest heavily into educating people about the animals that are in decline throughout the world and to help them in this education process they use outdoor digital signage.

They had a recent requirement where they deployed touch screen kiosks and this was rolled out, however they wanted to use a large 52” LCD screen to give visitors information for the penguin section, here they worked closely with LCD Enclosure Global to create a solution that can also store a media player that could be accessed easily without opening the enclosure and disturbing the penguins, whilst making sure the outdoor digital signage solution was protected from the elements.

LCD Enclosure Global came up with a solution for the enclosure that accommodated both the screen and the media player, with an access hatch so that essential updates could be carried out in the future.

The LCD enclosure also featured an inbuilt screen mount that had a maximum VESA pattern of 800 x 400, as well as a thermostatically controlled heating and cooling system, the screen was viewed through an anti glare and UV protected viewing window manufactured from shatterproof, toughened glass.

LCD Enclosure Global is the worlds leading manufacturer of outdoor LCD enclosures supplying mainly the digital signage industry throughout the world. So you want to know how to create your own outdoor cinema?

Setting up an outdoor home cinema is a reasonably large undertaking, not only in terms of physical installation, but also in financial outlay. A sensible option would be to host a ‘trial night’, whereby you would hire the equipment and an operator to try it out. This way you can get a feel for all the technical details and decide on the ideal requirements for your location.

If it’s the ‘Wow’ factor you’re after, and then consider how to make the most of these important factors, which will determine your Al Fresco Theatre kit.

  • Do you have a suitable spot to site the outdoor screen
  • Where can you place the projector/screen
  • Is there safe access for the power supply
  • Where is the best location for the speakers
  • Can you safely conceal the power leads
  • Consider the sunlight at different times of the day – maybe you’ll use your Al Fresco theatre more in the evening, however do think about excess light from street lighting or next doors’ tennis court
  • How can you arrange the seating, so that the ‘audience’ can all see clearly
  • Be considerate to your neighbours – how loud should you have the movie sound track?

Most locations are suitable for your Backyard Box Office, even incorporating a room from the house that flows into the garden, using this as the base for the projector. This allows a safer arrangement for the power supply and technical equipment, as it is weather protected and away from interference of the audience. The only equipment outdoors is the screen or projector and speakers, which need to be weather proofed.

It is also possible to use the outdoor cinema for fund raising, however do check the licensing arrangements.

A Rugged LCD enclosure will protect TVs from damage in a manufacturing or production facility when used as plant information points.

In the past we have used notice boards, however to reflect a more forward thinking company, businesses are using the latest technologies, this is a situation when there is a cross over from the digital signage industry.

Not only are these information points used for staff training on the latest best production practices, they can also be used to give corporate information on major project and contracts won, new customers, stock prices and even feature employee of the month. Now there is also an underlying reason for use, this is to promote the companies product range, this also enforced the brand when ever any visitors arrive on site.

Types of production facilities and what type of ruggedized LCD enclosure would be used.

General Manufacturing.
This type of manufacturer ranges from the local engineering company to major manufacturers such as Rolls Royce who manufacture airplane engines. In this environment a flat panel screen would be very vulnerable from the hazards in the air, such as dust, carbon, glass particles, mist, acids and even coolants.

The problem with air borne particles is that they are small, sometimes too small to see but once particles start to build up on internal circuit boards, it will cause a short circuit and the screen can die, due to corrosion inside the TV set.

The solution – is to look for a product that is either IP56 (European Standard) or NEMA 4X (US standard), you can purchase IP56 television sets however the cost is extremely restrictive, the other option is to purchase a standard flat panel screen and a ruggedized LCD enclosure that offers IP56 protection. These rugged LCD enclosures are equipped with special cooling systems that also feature a filter, to ensure clean air enters into the enclosure, trapping the harmful particles in the filter.

Food Manufacturing.
This kind of manufacturing is quite different, as here water is present in high quantities, as all food manufacturers have to wash down the production areas every day, if not every shift. This is required to kill any germs and prevent bacteria build up. So here an IP65 (European standard) or NEMA 4X (US standard).

As you can imagine, if water got into a television set, it would certainly die, even if it wasn’t in direct contact with water, the vapour in the air would eventually damage the screen.

The solution – is to either purchase a waterproof television, again this option is very expensive, however an IP66 LCD enclosure is a more cost effective solution. The waterproof protection is there to protect the screen water ingress, so much so the ruggedized LCD enclosure can be washed down with a high pressure water jet and the screen remains perfectly safe form water ingress. A stainless steel LCD enclosure is manufactured from food quality stainless steel due to the constant contact with water and the stainless steels ability to resist corrosion.

Using a ruggedized LCD enclosure is the most cost effective solution it will certainly protect a TV in a factory.

In the past few years gas stations have struggled getting paying customers into the onsite convenience store since the introduction of the pay at the pump system.

In this day and age of every second counts, the introduction of pay at the pump was a huge success but it has one huge draw back, once a driver fills his car or truck with gas he pays and drives off saving the driver time. The drawback with pay at the pump is that the driver does not enter the store to purchase other merchandise.

Here is a scenario looked at from both angles, the first scenario above demonstrates the convenience for the driver who pays at the pump and goes but leaves the onsite store missing out. The second scenario is where a gas station digital signage is used.

The driver pulls up and whilst filling his vehicle watches the LCD screen on the gas pump, in between the weekend sports results and the weather he notices the mornings special breakfast offer, comprising of a coffee, packet of chips and a sandwich for a bargain $4.99, the driver knows he has a 2 hour drive to his next meeting and will need to stop for lunch so he clicks the screen and adds the promotional lunch to his bill, once he has finished filling up with gas he goes in to the convenience store to collect his lunch.

Digital signage can do all this, a typical system comprises of two screens up to 26 inches in a back to back formation with a media player in between them feeding them with content and the relevant RSS feeds for news and sports, these are all housed in a gas pump digital signage enclosure.

Once one of these systems are deployed, any gas station can create an additional income stream, by selling advertising slots on to the signage system, even digital advertising agencies would be queuing up to purchase the spare time, however one point to remember is that you must ensure your competitors do not purchase the ad spot to promote their products at your gas station.

Outdoor TV systems are a must have for this summers sports fixtures from soccer, cricket, motor racing and even cricket, if you are not planning to watch these events in your back yard or beer garden, you should be ashamed of yourself.

So ok, if you have been with us on the trek through the last two articles you will know that we have looked at outdoor speakers and the choices involved with the television itself, as well as securing them from theft and the weather with a weatherproof LCD enclosure. Now we turn our attention to the actual television connection and getting from the house to the garden.

TV signal Connection.
In your home you will have either a set top box from Sky or whoever supplies you with this service, from this box you will have to extend the signal to the location outside in your back yard. There are two types hard wired and wireless.

Hard wired solutions.
The first one is hard wired, this will involve running a signal cable from the set top box to your TV outside, the main thing to remember is that you must put the cable in some conduit, dig a trench in your garden and put the conduit and cable into the ditch and backfill it. This will prevent beloved pets from chewing the cable, or you cutting the cable when you do any gardening.

Wireless solution.
With wireless technology becoming ever so much more available the price has started to drop dramatically, putting it within reach of everyone – financially. They comprise of two parts the receiver and sender, the sender is connected to the set top box and the receiver is connected to the scart connection of the television set outdoors. Then you are set to go.

We hope this has been helpful and remember the sun screen – have a good summer.
